I know the sound of chains pulling the cars up the hill is standard on coasters, but on the Anaconda, it's RIDICLOUSLY loud! I'll admit, the first drop into the under water tunnel is pretty unique, but because there is a curve on the first drop, the plummet down is insanely slow! Once you go thru the under water tunnel and hit that first loop, you'll realize soon enough that this ride will show NO MERCY. First off, its SUPER loud going up the initial hill. This is hands down one of the most painful rides I've EVER ridden. "I don't think I'll ride that ride again," Fisher said.Capacity Location Headbanging Discomfort Tear it down!Īll things must come to an end at some point and Anaconda is one of them! When they return, Fisher and her friends said, they don't expect to be standing in line for the Anaconda. It started out that way, but it sure didn't end that way." The riders praised officials for getting them down safely, but said they were annoyed that they had to make a fuss before the park issued complimentary passes for another day.Īt first, "All they told us was, 'Have a good day,' " said Luchina Fisher, who writes for People magazine. I know it,' " said Melissa Wajnert, 20, an American University student who said she is terrified of heights. "You just thought, 'Oh my God, oh my God, I'm going to die. While they were trapped, several riders said, they felt claustrophic because they were strapped in with large padded collars and could not move. "I was looking forward to an adventure, to something fun that'll make me jump a little." "I'd been hearing the commercials," said Kym France, 20, a student at American University who was at the park with Hoflund and six other friends. Kings Dominion, which had a record 2.2 million visitors last year, inaugurated the Anaconda in late March with great fanfare. Park officials attributed the accident to a "freak occurrence," but subsequently increased the distance between the raftlike boats on the ride. Last August, three people riding a boat in the park's Whitewater Canyon were injured when it flipped over. Barry said that accident involved no malfunction or operator error. One of those deaths was at Kings Dominion in 1983 when a rider hit his head on a supporting beam on the Galaxy coaster. ![]() She said that her reports indicate the passengers were stuck only 25 feet above ground and only for about 20 minutes.įrom 1973 to 1988, 27 people died on roller coasters in North America. I can understand folks being frustrated." "It's a pain, but you'd rather be on the safe side. "Actually, it means that they work too well and they pick up things we can't see," Barry said. Such shutdowns, she added, can occur when the sensors pick up anything from a bird to a raindrop, and do not indicate any flaws in the coaster. Serena Barry, a spokeswoman for the Virginia amusement park located about 75 miles south of Washington, said the incident was the result of hypersensitive photo-sensors that picked up something unusual and signaled the computer to shut down the coaster.Īn inspection turned up no malfunctions, and the coaster is ready to reopen when the park begins its daily summer schedule tomorrow, Barry said. And then about three-fourths of the way up the first incline, their cars suddenly came to a halt and the riders said they remained stuck 80 to 100 feet in the air until they finally were evacuated down a catwalk. It is the only roller coaster of its kind.īut Hoflund's friends talked her into it. With six loops and 2,700 feet of track, the two-month-old Anaconda takes its passengers up, down and around some of the scariest turns in the park, capped by a 144-foot plunge into an underwater tunnel. Hoflund hadn't wanted to ride the new $5 million roller coaster in the first place. I felt I was locked into this thing I couldn't get out of." "I was freaked out," said Bryce Hoflund, 21, a student at American University who was one of the riders suspended on the coaster when it shut down abruptly Monday. But for about 28 thrill-seekers who boarded the new Anaconda roller coaster at Kings Dominion on Memorial Day, being trapped high above the ground for 40 minutes was not part of the bargain. Even a 144-foot tumble into an underwater tunnel, okay. They had paid for fear, but this wasn't what they had in mind.Ī few hair-raising turns, sure. ![]()
